Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Liu Jinsong Meets with Lao Ambassador to China Khamphao Ernthavanh

2021/09/17

On September 16, 2021, Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Liu Jinsong met with Lao Ambassador to China Khamphao Ernthavanh. The two sides exchanged views on the relationship between the two parties and between two countries and international and regional issues of common concern.

Liu Jinsong said that on my trip to Huay Xai, a border town in Laos, 20 years ago, I was deeply impressed by the beautiful scene of "fish in the river and rice in the paddy fields". Connected by shared mountains and rivers, the two countries enjoy a long-lasting traditional friendship dating back to the exchanges between China's Central Plain dynasties and Laos in the 3rd Century. General Secretary Xi Jinping and many descendants of the Pholsena family of Laos were schoolmates at Beijing Bayi School. The memories of the old days remained fresh in his mind when Xi talked about them affectionately many years later. In the past 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, carefully nurtured and promoted by generations of leaders of both countries and parties, China and Laos have maintained a high level of comprehensive strategic cooperation with fruitful results. In 2017, General Secretary and President Xi Jinping paid a historic state visit to Laos and agreed with the supreme leader of Laos to build a China-Laos community with a shared future of strategic importance and bring China-Laos relations to a brand-new era. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two sides have shared weal and woe and worked together to fight the pandemic, further enhancing the comradely and brotherly friendship between the two countries.

Liu Jinsong stressed that there is a saying in Laos, "Nothing is difficult if you have a strong will." In front of all kinds of difficulties, China and Laos will always stand firm with each other. China is ready to work with Laos to implement the important consensus reached between the leaders of the two parties and two countries, deeply exchange the experiences of the party and state governance, strengthen the alignment of development strategies, enhance the cooperation on the pandemic prevention and control, accelerate the building of the economic corridor, ensure the commissioning of the China-Laos Railway within this year, and continue to build the China-Laos community with a shared future. Laos is an important ASEAN member. More piles make a strong fence. China is willing to work with ASEAN countries including Laos to push for new progress in China-ASEAN relations.

Khamphao Ernthavanh said that we are ready to embrace and carry forward the Laos-China friendship which was built and nurtured by the older generation of leaders of the two parties and two countries. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). In July, upon the invitation of the Department of Asian Affairs of China's Foreign Ministry, I took the staff of the Lao Embassy in China to visit the sites of revolutionary movements in Guangxi. We also visited Beijing Xiangshan Revolutionary Memorial Site and Beijing Bayi School this Wednesday and had a better understanding of the CPC's people-centered philosophy of seeking happiness for the Chinese people. In the past 100 years, the CPC has united and led the Chinese people in obtaining remarkable achievements and valuable experience, providing a strong impetus and an example of success for our building of a socialist country. I believe that under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with General Secretary Xi Jinping at its core, there must be new and greater progress in the building of socialism with Chinese characteristics. At Present, Laos-China relations are at the best of all time. Laos is willing to work with China to carry forward the spirit of "good neighbors, good friends, good comrades and good partners", and take the opportunity of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-Laos diplomatic relations and the Year of China-Laos Friendship to carry out the action plan on building the Laos-China community with a shared future and keep improving and upgrading our bilateral relations in the new era.
