Wang Yi Meets with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry

On March 22, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Islamabad on the sidelines of the session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) upon invitation.

Wang Yi said that China and Egypt enjoy profound friendship and solid mutual trust. Not long ago, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi made a special trip to China to attend the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. President Xi Jinping met with him and the two presidents reached important consensus, injecting strong impetus into bilateral relations. Last year, bilateral trade volume increased by 37 percent amid the overall downward trend, fully demonstrating the high degree of complementarity of the two economies. The two countries have joined hands to fight the pandemic and build Africa's first joint vaccine production line, demonstrating traditional friendship and enriching the comprehensive strategic partnership. China has always given priority to its relations with Egypt in its diplomacy with the Middle East and Africa. China is ready to work with Egypt toward the goal of building a China-Egypt community with a shared future in the new era, and to push bilateral relations to new heights.

Shoukry congratulated China on successfully hosting the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, saying that Egypt and China enjoy profound friendship and fruitful cooperation in various fields. He thanked China for its strong support for Egypt's fight against COVID-19, spoke highly of the key role played in the joint vaccine production between the two countries, and appreciated the active participation of Chinese enterprises in key projects such as the construction of Egypt's new administrative capital and infrastructure. Egypt is willing to continue to deepen Belt and Road cooperation and accelerate mutually beneficial and practical cooperation under the guidance of the consensus reached by the two heads of state.

Shoukry said, Egypt will host the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the end of this year. Egypt attaches great importance to China's important role and contributions and looks forward to strengthening coordination and cooperation with China to help developing countries achieve the goal of climate change.

Wang Yi said that China has always taken part in the global action on climate change with a responsible attitude and made important contributions to reaching the Paris Agreement. We support Egypt in successfully hosting the COP27, and stand ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Egypt and take the 30th anniversary of the UNFCCC as an opportunity, to uphold the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, push for full and effective implementation of the UNFCCC, ensure that the global response to climate change moves forward in the right direction, and achieve more results in helping developing countries achieve green recovery and sustainable development.

The two sides exchanged views on China's cooperation with Islamic countries. Shoukry welcomed China's attendance at the session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, saying that China's participation is of vital importance and sends a strong signal to the Islamic world, fully demonstrating China's positive attitude of attaching importance to Islamic countries and its readiness to strengthen mutual understanding and support with the Islamic world. Wang Yi said that China and Islamic countries have a shared history of a bitter past and both face the common task of development and revitalization. In the face of the current volatile international situation, China is ready to strengthen coordination and deepen cooperation with Islamic countries to safeguard and expand common interests.

The two sides exchanged views on the Ukraine issue, and agreed to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and stay committed to a comprehensive solution to the current crisis. Shoukry said, Egypt opposes some countries exerting pressure on China and stands for strengthening cooperation rather than escalating confrontation.
