H.E. Ambassador Huang Zheng Meets with Dr. Eunyoung Ko, WHO Country Liason Officer to the FSM

On February 18, 2020, Ambassador Huang Zheng met with Dr. Eunyoung Ko, Country Liason Officer of the World Health Organizaiton to the FSM, Palau and Marshall Islands. Counselor Zhang Weitao,Deputy Head of Mission, among others, attended the meeting.

Ambassador Huang comprehensively introduced the series of firm and timely actions the Chinese government has taken to handle with the Novel Coronavirus epidemic and major effects these actions have brought about. He emphasized the leadership and personal commitment of President Xi Jinping,and that the CPC Central Committee has always been prioritizing people's life and health high on its agenda. Now a comprehensive, multi-level inter-agency task force system has been in place nationwide. Indicators in the past few days have shown improvement of the situation. Huang pointed out that with the firm and strong CPC Party leadership, with our great mobilization capacity and institutional advantages, and with our rich experience in responding to public health emergencies, China has full confidence, capability and determination to win this battle.

Ambassador Huang pointed out that since the outbreak of the epidemic, the Chinese government has upheld an open, transparent and responsible attitude, and actively engaged in international cooperation. China offers protection to the safety and health of foreign nationals same as to its own people. It makes full effort in safeguarding domestic and global public health security and has made huge sacrifice. China's efforts have won full appreciation, understanding and support from the international community. Heads and leaders of many countries and international organizations, including H.E. David W. Panuelo, President of the FSM and T.H. Wesley W. Simina, Speaker of the FSM national Congress,have expressed their support and sympathies to China. Huang stressed that China highly appreciates and sincerely thanks Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, who upholds fair and unbiased position, providing scientific and reasonable suggestions based on science and facts, and offering valuable support to China.

Lastly, Ambassador Huang emphasized that the epidemic is only temporary while friendship and cooperation will stay in the long run. China is committed to working with all other countries to tide over the difficulties, prevail over the outbreak, and ensure the health and safety of each and every member of our Community with a Shared Future for Humanity. He requested that Dr. Eunyoung Ko play an active role in guiding the FSM government, in the spirit of the correct judgment of the WHO and Dr. Tedros,to analyze and estimate the epidemic in a comprehensive, objective and scientific manner, and to avoid panic or overreaction.

Dr. Ko thanked Ambassador Huang for his detailed introduction and expressed deep appreciation to the leadership of President Xi Jinping. She expressed full understanding and support to the CPC and Chinese government in taking firm and effective measures in handling with the epidemic and extended deep sympathies and the sincerest gratitude to the Chinese people. She acknowledged that China's effort is not only safeguarding the health of its own people, but also contributing to the world public health efforts with concrete action. The World Health Organization will stand firmly with China and wish the Chinese government and people can win the battle in an early date. Dr. Ko also introduced her work in providing consultation to the FSM government since the outbreak of the epidemic, stressing she would strictly follow the International Health Regulations (2005) and principles of the WHO headquarter, and suggest to the FSM Government that FSM needs to fully respect the professional suggestions of WHO, respect facts and science, and look at the epidemic objectively and rationally to avoid panicking or taking any overreaction.
