Le Yucheng: China Has No Interest in Hegemony or Power Games

2019/10/24

At the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations Forum 2019, Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng pointed out that it is wrong to assert that the US hegemony will be handed over to China amid the global power shift. Such a claim is inconsistent with the trend of our times. In a globalized era, power is getting decentralized and flattened, not shifting from one country to another. The idea of power shift is an outdated, zero-sum mentality. China has never had the intention to challenge or to replace the US, or unseat any other country. Our goal is to deliver a better life for our people and improve governance. We believe in a multipolar world and democracy in international relations. And we support multilateralism and free trade. We have never intended to rival for hegemony with the US, and we are not interested in power games.
