President Jiang Zemin Met with PNG Prime Minister

On October 21, President Jiang Zemin met with Prime Minister Mekere Morauta of Papua New Guinea in Shanghai.

Morauta thanked President Jiang and the Chinese government for the warm reception accorded him and congratulated the Chinese government and President Jiang on its success in hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders Meeting.

Morauta said Papua New Guinea has adhered to a "one China" policy since it established diplomatic relations with China 25 years ago, and expressed the hope to further develop bilateral ties, particularly exchanges and cooperation in economic and trade sectors.

Jiang appreciated Morauta's adherence to the "one China" policy and active efforts to promote bilateral relations since he came into office.

Jiang said that bilateral relations have achieved great development since the two countries established diplomatic relations 25 years ago, with frequent exchanges of visits between senior officials of the two sides, deepening mutual understanding and friendship, remarkable results in economic cooperation and trade, and increasing volume of bilateral trade. As APEC members, China and Papua New Guinea have had good cooperation in international and regional affairs. China is ready to make joint efforts with PNG to further enhance friendly and cooperative ties in the new century.
