On July 7, 2023, Director-General of the Department of Arms Control of the Foreign Ministry Sun Xiaobo had a phone call with Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service Enrique Mora. They exchanged views on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Sun Xiaobo noted that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is an important outcome of multilateral diplomacy endorsed by the UN Security Council resolution, and a key pillar for maintaining the international nuclear non-proliferation system and peace and stability in the Middle East. China calls on relevant parties to resume negotiations at an early date, restore the full and effective implementation of the JCPOA, uphold the consensus reached in past negotiations, and address the legitimate concerns of all parties in a balanced manner. China will continue to support the EU’s coordinated political and diplomatic efforts to uphold the JCPOA.
