Joint Communique of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Macedonia

At the invitation of His Excellency Mr. Jiang Zemin, President of the People?s Republic of China, His Excellency Mr. Kiro Gligorov, President of the Republic of Macedonia, paid a state visit to the People?s Republic of China from June 9 to 13, 1997.

President Jiang Zemin of the People?s Republic of China and President Kiro Gligorov of the Republic of Macedonia held talks. The two leaders had an in-depth exchange of views on ways of bolstering bilateral relations and international issues of mutual interest and reached broad consensus. The talks proceeded in a sincere and friendly atmosphere. Both sides were satisfied with the results of the talks, and of the view that the visit would have an important impact on the continued development of China-Macedonia friendly relations and cooperation.

China and Macedonia have been friendly towards each other and the two peoples enjoyed a traditional friendship. The two sides expressed satisfaction with their cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and educational fields since the establishment of diplomatic development of their friendly relations and cooperation conforms with the common aspirations of the two peoples, serves the fundamental interests of both countries and is conducive to peace and development in Asia and Europe.

The two sides are determined to intensify their bilateral cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual benefit in all fields, particularly in the economic relations and trade. They will encourage their respective companies, enterprises and localities to increase contact, enhance mutual understanding and conduct multi-channeled and multi-formed cooperation with a view to promoting the long-term steady development of the bilateral economic relations and trade.

The Macedonian side reaffirmed its continued commitment to the principled ?one China? position, recognizing that there is but one China in the world, that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and that the Government of the People?s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the entire Chinese people. The Republic of Macedonia has undertaken not to enter into official relations or engage in any official contacts with Taiwan. The Macedonian side stated that it valued China?s important role in Asia and the world at large, spoke highly of the independent foreign policy of peace pursued by China and admired the achievements it had made in its reform and opening up endeavor.

The Chinese side affirmed that it would respect the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Macedonia and the road to development chosen by the Macedonian people. It admired the achievements made by Macedonia in developing its economy and improving the living standards of its people, spoke highly of the foreign policy of peace pursued by Macedonia and its positive efforts in stabilizing the situation in the Balkans and expressed its understanding of Macedonia?s endeavor to join the process of European integration.

President of the Republic of Macedonia Kiro Gligorov thanked the Chinese side for its warm reception and generous hospitality, and invited President of the People?s Republic of China Jiang Zemin to visit Macedonia at his convenience. President Jiang Zemin expressed his appreciation and accepted the invitation with pleasure.
