2010/03/23

On March 23, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with Malta's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tonio Borg in the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

China-Malta relations have made great progress since diplomatic ties were forged in 1972, said Yang, adding that China appreciated Malta's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China on issues concerning China's core interests. China is willing to work with Malta to maintain bilateral exchanges at all levels, expand new areas of economic and trade cooperation and strengthen contacts in humanities, tourism and other areas so that China-Malta relations will yield more fruitful results.

Borg said Malta-China relations have been developing well and can serve as a model of relations between big and small countries. Malta attaches importance to its relations with China, and will continue to firmly adhere to the one-China policy. Malta would make active efforts to promote the development of E.U.-China relations as China's good friend in the Mediterranean and the European Union, he said.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
