Hu Jintao Meets with Mauritanian President

On the afternoon of September 23, 2011, President Hu Jintao met with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who is here to attend the 2nd China-Arab States Economic and Trade Forum and visit China, at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu spoke highly of the stable and sound development of China-Mauritania relations since the two countries established diplomatic ties 46 years ago. The two countries have witnessed deepening political mutual trust, expanding trade and fruitful cooperation in all areas, the Chinese president said. Both sides have also maintained good coordination and cooperation within the frameworks of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum and China-Africa Cooperation Forum. "To develop China-Mauritania friendship is consistent with the trend of the times and common aspiration of both peoples, and is also conducive to boosting China-Arab, China-Africa relations," Hu said.

Hu proposed the following measures to further enhance the level of bilateral pragmatic cooperation. First, strengthen friendly exchanges. Both sides should deepen political ties with sincere friendship, equality and mutual trust. Second, expand economic and trade cooperation. He urged both sides to bolster cooperation in the fishing, mining, infrastructure construction and other traditional areas, steadily advance cooperation in such emerging sectors as communications, energy, science and technology and jointly implement key cooperation projects of the two countries. Third, build up friendship between both peoples. He called on both countries to expand cooperation on culture, education, health, quarantine and journalism and to promote dialogues and exchanges between different civilizations. Fourth, keep closer multilateral cooperation. China is ready to maintain communication and coordination with Mauritania on global issues including UN reform, climate change, poverty alleviation, disaster reduction and food security.

Aziz echoed Hu's proposals on furthering bilateral ties, saying the two countries have continuously developed their ties, supported and helped each other over the years while maintaining common interests. He said Mauritania is thankful to China for its valuable assistance in Mauritania's economic and social development. Mauritania attaches great importance to its relations with China, as the country is a reliable friend and important cooperative partner, Aziz said. He pledged to continue firmly supporting China's reunification cause. He vowed to continue to work with China to strengthen high-level exchanges, enhance coordination in regional and international affairs and expand mutually beneficial cooperation in the areas of trade, agriculture, fishing, mining and infrastructure construction so as to push bilateral ties to a new level.

After the meeting, the two heads of state attended a signing ceremony of relevant bilateral cooperation documents.

Also present at the meeting and the signing ceremony were Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming, Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun and Chinese Ambassador to Mauritania Chen Gonglai.
