2021-03-29 18:51

On March 29, 2021, Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Syrian Issue Xie Xiaoyan gave a group interview to Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, China Media Group and others on the 10th anniversary of the outbreak of the Syrian crisis.

Xie Xiaoyan said that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the outbreak of the Syrian crisis. In the past 10 years, Syria has suffered from external intervention, imposed solutions, terrorism, blockades and sanctions. The decade-long crisis in Syria has fully proved that military means could not resolve the issue, and imposing solutions and seeking regime change would not work. The Syrian issue can only be solved through political means.

Xie Xiaoyan said that in the past 10 years, China has always explicitly opposed external forces interfering in Syria's internal affairs, opposed the resolution of the issue by military means, and advocated peaceful and proper solution through inclusive and political dialogue. China has always firmly upheld that Syria's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity should be respected and safeguarded, Syria's future and destiny should be decided by the Syrian people, and a political settlement is the only realistic way out.

Xie Xiaoyan said that in the past 10 years, China has taken active actions to facilitate a political settlement of the Syrian issue and intensively promoted peace talks. China accepted the visit by delegations of the Syrian government and opposition groups, and hosted international symposiums on the Syrian issue. China put forward various initiatives and proposals for the settlement of the Syrian issue such as the "five principles", supported and participated in such international peace efforts as the Geneva peace talks and the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi. Because of its great importance to humanitarian problems in Syria, China has provided multiple batches of emergency humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people including its overseas refugees through various channels, assisted the Syrian people in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic by providing anti-pandemic supplies and holding video exchanges between Chinese and Syrian health experts, and held workshops on Syria's development and reconstruction.

Xie Xiaoyan said that under the current circumstances, China once again calls for resolving the Syrian issue at an early date from four aspects, including upholding the general direction of political settlement, firmly opposing terrorism, earnestly improving the humanitarian situation, and providing support for economic and social reconstruction.
