Wang Yi: Addressing the Issue of Afghanistan Requires Reinforced Support in Four Aspects

2015/02/12

On February 12 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was on an official visit to Pakistan, responded upon request when jointly met the press with Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz of Pakistan that reinforced support in four aspects is required for addressing the issue of Afghanistan.

Wang Yi expressed that Afghanistan has entered a critical period of transformation after the withdrawal of the International Security Assistance Force. For a long time, Afghanistan has been plagued by war, turmoil and poverty, and now it is time to put an end to such situation. This is a strong aspiration of the Afghan people and also the common wish of the international community, including China and Pakistan.

Wang Yi pointed out that tackling the issue of Afghanistan demands enhanced support in four aspects:

First, support the effective administration of the Afghan National Unity Government. The international community should respect the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan, and respect the development path that the Afghan people have chosen according to their own national conditions.

Second, support the reconciliation between the Afghan government and various political forces including the Taliban. The broad-based inclusive reconciliation, on the “Afghan-led and Afghan-owned” basis, is the right direction for Afghanistan towards national unity and harmony, and long-term security and stability, to which the international community should give encouragement and support. The Chinese side is also willing to play a constructive role in this course. If the political forces in Afghanistan are in need, the Chinese side is always ready to provide necessary convenience for the reconciliation process.

Third, support the economic and social reconstruction of Afghanistan. To solve the issue of Afghanistan, reconciliation is the key and reconstruction is the root. Only with people’s farewell to poverty at an early date as a result of economic and social development can a brand-new future be brought to Afghanistan. The Chinese government is willing to work with the international community to be actively devoted to enhancing the capacity of independent development of Afghanistan. We will earnestly implement every solemn commitment made by the Chinese side in supporting Afghanistan’s reconstruction.

Fourth, support Afghanistan’s integration in regional cooperation. We welcome Afghanistan to actively participate in the initiative of constructing “One Belt One Road” put forward by the Chinese side in line with its own development needs. At the same time, we welcome Afghanistan to work with China and other neighboring countries to realize common development, mutual benefit and win-win results through the convergence of respective development strategies.

Wang Yi emphasized that Pakistan is an important neighboring country of Afghanistan and that the two countries enjoy impartible natural connections in various aspects such as history, culture, nationality and religion. Pakistan has always played a unique and irreplaceable role in dealing with the issue of Afghanistan. In future, both China and Pakistan are willing to strengthen communication and coordination with Afghanistan and work with the international community to make unremitting efforts to realize the successful transition of Afghanistan.
