Wang Yi: Steadily Promote Negotiations on a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea Step by Step

2013/06/27

On June 27, 2013, Foreign Minister Wang Yi answered questions about making a "Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC)" at the Luncheon of the second World Peace Forum. Wang Yi said that the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) states clearly that all parties should make joint efforts toward "a code of conduct in the South China Sea" on the basis of consensus. It is the joint commitment made by China and the ten countries of ASEAN. China will continue to adhere to the commitment. The right path should be to fully implement the DOC, while steadily promoting the negotiations on COC step by step. Wang Yi stressed that it is a continuous and progressive process from DOC to COC, both of which are interconnected and should not be separated, and we cannot choose the COC and discard the DOC. We will work together with ASEAN countries and continue to make our efffort to promote this process.
