Special Envoy of the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Afghan Affairs Sun Yuxi Holds Press Conference for Chinese and Afghan Media

On July 25, 2014, Special Envoy of the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Afghan Affairs Sun Yuxi held a press conference for Chinese and Afghan media in Kabul, briefing on his visit to Afghanistan and answering questions from journalists.

Special Envoy Sun expressed on the current situation of Afghanistan that Afghanistan is currently at a crucial moment. During this visit to Afghanistan, I met respectively with President Hamid Karzai and two presidential candidates Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah. They all expressed that they hope the Afghan electoral process will end as soon as possible. I believe that Afghanistan will form a government featuring national solidarity in the future and the main task of the new government will be to realize national reconciliation and devote to economic construction.

When asked by a journalist about the role China will play on the Afghan issue in the future, Special Envoy Sun expressed that Afghanistan must realize national reconciliation and vigorously carry out economic construction if it is to realize national stability and prosperity. The Chinese side supports the peaceful reconciliation process "led by Afghan people and owned by Afghan people" and is willing to play a constructive role. China will continue to provide assistance within its capacity for Afghanistan and to encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest and conduct business in Afghanistan.

When asked about the role of the international community on the Afghan issue, Special Envoy Sun expressed that for a long time, the goal of the international community on the Afghan issue is highly consistent, namely to push Afghanistan to realize peace, stability and development at an early date. The Chinese side stands ready to continue to coordinate closely with relevant parties of the international community to promote the early realization of the above objectives.
