China and Myanmar Hold the Fourth Meeting of 2+2 High-level Consultation Led by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence

On December 18, 2018, the fourth meeting of China-Myanmar 2+2 High-level Consultation led by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence was held in Kunming. Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou, Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission Shao Yuanming, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin of Myanmar and Chief of the No.1 Special Operations Bureau of the Tatmadaw Tun Tun Naung of Myanmar co-chaired the consultation.

Focusing on implementing high-level consensus, both sides exchanged views mainly on the Northern Myanmar issue. Both sides believed that as situation in northern Myanmar concerns the peace and tranquility in China-Myanmar border areas and the benefits of the inhabitants of the border areas of the two countries, all parties of northern Myanmar should practically keep restraint, realize cease-fire as soon as possible and avoid affecting stability in the border areas. To this end, both sides will further adopt necessary measures, jointly control situation in northern Myanmar, and strengthen stability and management cooperation in border areas. The two sides should protect the safety and the legitimate rights of the inhabitants of the border areas of the two countries, and ensure smooth access to key ports and smooth implementation of major cooperation projects, in a bid to jointly safeguard the stability of the border areas of the two countries and the overall situation of China-Myanmar friendly cooperation with concrete actions.

The Myanmar side briefed the latest development of peace process in the country, expressed its appreciation for the Chinese side's constructive role in promoting peace talks of Myanmar's peace process, and expected that the Chinese side will continue its efforts in this regard. The Chinese side welcomed and supported the positive development of Myanmar's peace process achieved recently and supported the Myanmar side in well holding the next 21st Century Panlong Conference as well as expressed the willingness to jointly promote the construction of China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, so as to facilitate the development of north Myanmar and the Myanmar-China border areas.
