Assistant Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong Attends Reception Celebrating the 3rd Anniversary of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) and LMC Week 2019

On March 22, 2019, Senior Official for Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) of the Chinese side and Assistant Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong attended the Reception Celebrating the 3rd Anniversary of the LMC and LMC Week 2019 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Over 200 people attended the event, including Lao Ambassador to China Vandy Bouthasavong, Cambodian Ambassador to China Khek Caimealy Sysoda, Myanmar Ambassador to China Thit Linn Ohn, Thai Ambassador to China Piriya Khempon, Vietnamese Ambassador to China Dang Minh Khoi, representatives from relevant international organizations, relevant Chinese ministries and commissions, local foreign affairs offices, media and universities, and enterprises.

Chen Xiaodong pointed out that over the past three years, the LMC has developed into one of the most dynamic cooperation mechanisms with the most potential in the Mekong sub-region. We have formed the LMC concept featuring openness and inclusiveness, win-win cooperation and coordinated development, put in place an LMC framework guided by leaders and underpinned by all-round cooperation and broad participation, cultivated the LMC mode of development first, pragmatism and efficiency and project as the orientation and carried forward an LMC culture featuring equality, sincerity, mutual assistance and kinship, bringing tangible benefits to the people of Lancang-Mekong countries and strongly boosting the development and prosperity of the region.

Chen Xiaodong expressed that as a good neighbor, good friend and good partner, China is willing to work with countries along the Mekong River to adhere to win-win cooperation, innovation-driven development, the livelihood of the people as the core, and openness and inclusiveness, so as to jointly forge LMC economic development belt, build a community with a shared future of Lancang-Mekong countries and jointly promote development and prosperity of the sub-region.

On behalf of the ambassadors to China of the five Mekong countries, Lao Ambassador Vandy Bouthasavong, the LMC Co-chair, expressed in his speech that the LMC has played an important role in promoting economic and social development and people's well-being in the sub-region, and facilitated the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative in the region. He also extended thanks to the Chinese side for its active contributions to that end. As the LMC Co-chair, Laos will work closely with the Chinese side to further advance the LMC to new highs and well prepare for the 3rd LMC Leaders' Meeting early in 2020.

At the reception, Chen Xiaodong and the ambassadors to China of the five Mekong countries jointly released the painting album, a hand-painted picture of the Lancang-Mekong area. Students from the six countries sang the LMC anthem Lancang and Mekong, A River of Friendship.
