Director-General of the Department of European Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Wang Lutong Holds a Briefing for Chinese and Foreign Media on the 22nd China-European Union (EU) Summit

On June 23, 2020, Director-General of the Department of European Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Wang Lutong held a briefing for Chinese and foreign media, introducing relevant information on the 22nd China-European Union (EU). Chinese and foreign media outlets including Bloomberg News, Reuters, AFP, Agencia EFE, ANSA, People's Daily, Xinhua News Agency, CCTV and Phoenix TV were present at the briefing.

Wang Lutong briefed the media on the background, main aspects, consensus and outcomes of the summit, and noted that this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-EU diplomatic relations. The summit this year was the first official meeting between the Chinese leader and the leaders of the new EU institutions and was also the most important event between China and the EU in the first half of this year. During the summit, leaders of both sides had candid and in-depth discussions on a wide range of topics such as COVID-19 response, economic recovery, international situation, China-EU relations, bilateral dialogue and cooperation across the board, and international and regional issues of common concern. The two sides have deepened their mutual understanding, and reached much important consensus, showcasing the comprehensiveness, strategic significance and mutually beneficial feature of China-EU relations, as well as charting the course and identifying the key points for China-EU relations in the next stage. Wang Lutong answered questions regarding China-EU economic and trade relations, negotiations on investment agreement and climate change, and elaborated on the Chinese side's principled stances on issues related to Hong Kong and human rights.
