Vice Foreign Minister Luo Zhaohui Meets with Sri Lankan Ambassador to China Dr. Palitha Kohona

On March 3, 2021, Vice Foreign Minister Luo Zhaohui met with new Ambassador of Sri Lanka to China Dr. Palitha Kohona.

Luo Zhaohui welcomed Dr. Palitha Kohona to assume his post and said that China and Sri Lanka are friendly neighbors with a lasting tradition of sincere mutual assistance. In the face of the changes rarely seen in a hundred years and the once-in-a-century pandemic, the two countries helped each other and joined hands to tide over the difficulties. Not long ago, the two foreign ministers reached positive consensus on the phone. China attaches great importance to the relations with Sri Lanka and is ready to work with the country to maintain high-level exchanges, implement the consensus of the leaders of the two countries, strengthen exchanges on governance experience, enhance anti-pandemic cooperation in which China will continue to advance vaccine cooperation with Sri Lanka, and jointly promote high-level Belt and Road cooperation by building Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port into two engines propelling the country's economic development. The two sides need to restart a new round of negotiations on a free trade agreement as soon as possible, bolster economic, trade and investment exchanges, strengthen cultural ties, resume and expand cooperation in the fields of poverty alleviation, education and tourism based on the pandemic situation, increase communication and coordination in multilateral organizations, and safeguard the common interests of the two countries and other developing countries.

Dr. Palitha Kohona congratulated on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and expressed his admiration for the great achievements made by the Chinese people under the CPC's leadership. He thanked China for helping Sri Lanka combat the virus, revive the economy and tackle internal and external challenges. Sri Lanka is willing to work with China to carry forward the tradition of high-level exchanges, jointly fight against the pandemic, push forward the construction of major BRI projects such as Hambantota Port and Colombo Port City, expand exchanges and communication in such fields as economy, trade, tourism, education, agriculture and poverty alleviation, and continue to resolutely support each other on issues involving each other's core interests, in order to lift the bilateral relations to a new level.

The two sides also exchanged views on other issues of common concern.
