China maintains with Brazil long-term and stable strategic partnership based on mutual benefit

In November, 1993, President Jiang Zemin visited Brazil during which the leaders of the two countries reached agreement on establishing a long-term and stable strategic partnership based on mutual benefit. The visit marked a milestone in Sino-Brazilian relations and was of great importance in enhancing friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Brazil is the largest country in Latin America and a developing country with huge potential for economic development. China places great importance on its friendly relations of cooperation with Brazil and views such relations as a concrete expression of South-South cooperation. Since the establishment of Sino-Brazilian relations in 1974, the two countries have made smooth progress in the political, economic, scientific and cultural fields. There have been frequent high level exchange of visits, and the foreign ministries of the two countries meet regularly to have political consultation. The two countries share same or similar views on many important international issues and maintain good consultation and cooperation in international affairs. Thanks to the personal attention paid by the leaders of the two countries and joint efforts made by two sides in many years, it was natural for China and Brazil to establish strategic partnership. Such partnership will boost Sino-Brazilian relations, benefit both peoples and promote South-South cooperation.

Since agreeing to establish strategic partnership in 1993, the leaders of the two countries have endeavored to give substance to this relationship and ensure its sustained and steady growth. Both countries are satisfied with the growth of their ties. In October, 1999, the first earth resources satellite jointly made by China and Brazil was successfully launched. It is a concrete expression of Sino-Brazilian strategic partnership and sets an example for South-South cooperation in high technology.

The steady growth of strategic partnership between China and Brazil will contribute to the establishment of a just and equitable new international political and economic order, the upholding of world peace, stability and the enhancement of common prosperity and economic security of developing countries.
