Wang Yi Meets with Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe

On December 6, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe, who is in China to jointly host the eighth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, in Beijing.

Wang Yi said, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, the 10th anniversary of building a community with a shared future for mankind, and the 10th anniversary of the principle of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit and inclusiveness in neighborhood diplomacy proposed by President Xi Jinping. LMC has always been at the forefront of implementing the above-mentioned important concepts. In this important year, China is ready to work with Lancang-Mekong countries to ensure a successful foreign ministers' meeting, discuss ways to advance cooperation and promote regional prosperity. U Than Swe said that the eighth LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting is of great significance, and he looks forward to working closely with China to push for a complete success of the meeting.

Wang Yi said, China and Myanmar are comprehensive strategic partners with traditional pauk-phaw friendship and have always supported and trusted each other. China expects Myanmar to realize domestic reconciliation as soon as possible within the constitutional framework and continue the political transition process. China never interferes in Myanmar's internal affairs, appreciates Myanmar's adherence to the one-China principle, and believes that Myanmar will, as always, firmly oppose acts for "Taiwan independence" and support China's cause of reunification. China appreciates Myanmar's immediate support for the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, and is willing to share with Myanmar its experience in Chinese modernization and actively promote the building of the China-Myanmar economic corridor.

Wang Yi emphasized that the recent cooperation between China and Myanmar on combating telecom fraud in northern Myanmar and rescuing trapped victims achieved effective results, effectively deterring criminals. The two sides should strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation to thoroughly eradicate the cancer of online gambling and telecom fraud.

Noting that China is Myanmar's most important neighbor, U Than Swe said Myanmar attaches great importance to developing relations with China, admires China's development achievements, and stands ready to deepen cooperation with China in various fields and jointly build a Myanmar-China community with a shared future. He thanked China for sharing cooperation opportunities with Myanmar within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. He said Myanmar will speed up domestic coordination and actively promote the building of the economic corridor. Noting that Myanmar still faces many domestic challenges, he said Myanmar hopes for continued support and help from China to achieve domestic peace and stability. Myanmar will resolutely crack down on telecom fraud and other cross-border illegal and criminal actions, and carry out comprehensive coordination and cooperation with China in this regard.

The two sides also had a friendly and in-depth exchange of views on stabilizing the situation in northern Myanmar.
