General Secretary and President Xi Jinping Speaks with General Secretary and Lao President Bounnhang Vorachit on the Phone

2020/04/03

On 3 April, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and President Xi Jinping spoke by phone with General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Bounnhang Vorachit.

On behalf of the CPC and the Chinese government and people, Xi extended sincere sympathies and firm support to the LPRP and the Lao government and people for their fight against COVID-19. Noting that both China and Laos are socialist countries led by a communist party, Xi recalled the letter of sympathy that he received from General Secretary Bounnhang at a critical moment of China's outbreak response and the sincere, brotherly help from various sectors in Laos. Such vivid examples of the spirit of solidarity, a defining feature of the China-Laos community with a shared future, will always be remembered by the Chinese people.

Xi said that he feels for the difficulties that Laos faces in combating COVID-19. China has sent an expert medical team to Laos at the earliest time possible and provided Laos with medical supplies. China will continue to do what it can to fully support and help Laos in light of its needs. He expressed confidence in the victory of the Lao people against the outbreak under the strong leadership of the LPRP Central Committee headed by General Secretary Bounnhang.

Xi pointed out that the outbreak once again drives home the importance and urgency of building a community with a shared future for mankind. The Extraordinary G20 Leaders' Summit on COVID-19 sent a positive message of solidarity in combating the virus and in keeping the world economy stable. China will continue to work with Laos and the wider international community for an early victory against the outbreak.

Xi expressed China's readiness to keep up the momentum of high-level exchanges with Laos. In the context of implementing the action plan on building a China-Laos community with a shared future, the two sides may intensify experience-sharing on Party and state governance, steadily advance major projects such as the China-Laos railway and economic corridor, promote people-to-people cooperation, and strengthen coordination on regional and international affairs. Such efforts will add substance to the vision of a China-Laos community with a shared future and deliver greater benefits to the people of both countries.

Xi wished the 11th National Congress of the LPRP to be held early next year a full success.

Bounnhang said that under General Secretary Xi's personal direction and instructions, the CPC has demonstrated strong political leadership and led the Chinese people in swiftly putting the outbreak under control, which is truly admirable. Acting in line with the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, the CPC has made joint appeals with more than 200 political parties around the world for closer international cooperation against the outbreak, and China has provided valuable support and assistance to other countries in need, thus demonstrating a great sense of responsibility of the CPC as a major party and of China as a major country.

Bounnhang expressed sincere appreciation for General Secretary Xi's solicitude for the outbreak in his country. China's timely experience-sharing and dispatch of experts and supplies are yet another testament to the profound friendship that has seen the two countries helping each other through thick and thin. Laos will strengthen political trust with China, speed up the implementation of the action plan, take forward practical cooperation in various fields, and work toward still greater achievements in the socialist cause in both countries.
