On August 1, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a bilateral meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhon of Cambodia before attending the Foreign Ministers' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation in Singapore.

Wang Yi congratulated Cambodia on successfully and smoothly holding the recent general election, and expressed that the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) has won the election again under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen, which shows the Cambodian people's affirmation for and trust in the ruling of the CPP. The Chinese side has always firmly supported Cambodia's efforts in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence and stability and opposed any foreign forces interfering in Cambodia's domestic affairs, and will continue to provide assistance for Cambodia to maintain stability and development.

Wang Yi said that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-Cambodia diplomatic relations and serves as an important year that inherits the past and ushers the future for China-Cambodia relations. China and Cambodia, as best friends and close partners, have made special and grand arrangements for the celebration activities. Both sides should continue to intensify high-level exchanges, advance the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, and strengthen cooperation in such fields as agricultural products, education and culture. Against the current international situation that is full of uncertainties, China, Cambodia and the countries in the region should be united to utter a loud voice of supporting multilateralism, and opposing unilateralism and protectionism, as well as send the clear message of jointly maintaining regional peace and stability, and promoting the common development of various countries.

Prak Sokhon expressed that the whole process of the just-concluded general election of Cambodia is peaceful, smooth, orderly and transparent. It is the vote by the Cambodian people with the desire for peace, stability and development. The Cambodian government will comply with the aspiration of its people, and strive to safeguard national security and stability, and promote economic and social development. China is the closest and most reliable friend of the Cambodian people. The Cambodian side thanks the Chinese side for offering long-term and firm support, and hopes that the Chinese side will continue to provide precious support for Cambodia during its process of promoting national stability and development in the future. The Cambodian side stands ready to, together with the Chinese side, intensify communication, jointly safeguard multilateralism and international rules, and maintain regional peace and stability.
