On October 29, 2008, Chinese President Hu Jintao sent a message of condolences to his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari over a major earthquake that caused heavy casualties and property losses in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province. Hu said in the message that he was shocked upon hearing the news of the earthquake and felt pain over the great casualties and property loss in Pakistan. The Chinese people are very sympathetic to the victims of the earthquake in Pakistan as they themselves are still recovering from a magnitude-8 quake that rocked China's Sichuan province in May, Hu said. The Chinese president, on behalf of the Chinese government and people and in his own name, expressed sincere sympathy to the Pakistani government and people and extended his profound condolences to the victims. He also expressed the belief that the Pakistani people in the quake-hit region will overcome the difficulties, win the fight against the disaster and rebuild their homeland under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and the Pakistani government.
On the same day, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao sent condolences to his Pakistani counterpart Yousaf Raza Gilani.
Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also sent condolences to his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
