China and Tunisia

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Tunisia on January 10, 1964, bilateral relations have been developing smoothly. In May 2024, Tunisian President Kais Saied paid a state visit to China and attended the opening ceremony of the 10th Ministerial Conference of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum, during which the two countries established a strategic partnership.

The two sides have maintained continuous political exchanges. During the first China-Arab States Summit in December 2022, President Xi Jinping met with Tunisian President Kais Saied. Visits from the Chinese side to Tunisia mainly include: Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi (May 2016), Vice Chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Wang Jiarui (December 2016), Vice Chairperson of the CPPCC National Committee Chen Xiaoguang (April 2019), and Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi (January 2024).

Visits from the Tunisian side to China or to attend diplomatic events in China: President Kais Saied (May 2024), Head of government Kamel Maddouri (September 2024), and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Ammar (May 2024).

Bilateral trade has grown steadily in recent years. In 2024, the total trade volume between China and Tunisia reached USD 2.88 billion, of which China's exports amounted to USD 2.38 billion and imports totaled USD 500 million. China mainly exports mechanical and electrical products, vehicles and spare parts, among others, and mainly imports electronic devices, textiles, apparel and other products.

The two countries have active people-to-people and cultural exchanges. In 1979, China and Tunisia signed an intergovernmental agreement on cultural cooperation, and since then, the two sides have signed a total of 14 implementation plans for cultural cooperation. In recent years, the two sides have maintained exchanges and cooperation in such fields as culture, education, archaeology and tourism. Tunisia is the second Arab and African country after Egypt to offer Chinese language undergraduate programs in universities. In April 2019, the Confucius Institute at the University of Carthage in Tunisia was officially established. Tunisia has incorporated the Chinese language into its national education system. In June 2023, the two sides signed a joint archaeological cooperation agreement to conduct joint archaeological research on the ancient Roman sites in the Ben Arous region.

Since 1973, China has sent medical teams to Tunisia from Jiangxi Province.

In 2017, Tunisia unilaterally implemented a visa-free policy for Chinese tour groups visiting Tunisia. In September 2023, Tunisia announced the implementation of a visa-free entry policy for all Chinese tourists.
