Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Meets with Chairman of the Free Democratic Party of Germany Westerwelle

On the morning of August 22, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in the office building of the Foreign Ministry with Guido Westerwelle, Chairman of the Free Democratic Party of Germany.

Yang spoke highly of China-Germany ties and hailed years of contributions by the Free Democratic Party to the development of bilateral ties. Yang said China attaches great importance to its friendly cooperative ties with Germany and is ready to strengthen exchange and cooperation with Germany in international and regional affairs. Westerwelle said the Free Democratic Party will stick to its traditional friendship with China and continue to push for bilateral ties, adding that to adhere to the one-China policy is a set policy of the German government.

Yang also briefed upon request about China's views on China-EU ties and comprehensively expounded China's stance on the nuclear issues related to the Korean Peninsula and Iran.

Westerwelle is visiting China from August 19 to 29 at the invitation of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee. He is the first chairman of the Free Democratic Party of Germany to pay an official visit to China. Besides Beijing, he will also visit Shanghai, Xi'an and Hong Kong.
