The year 2021 saw good progress in the strategic partnership of cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Suriname.
Political mutual trust continued to deepen. The year 2021 marked the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. President Xi Jinping and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi exchanged congratulatory messages with President Chandrikapersad Santokhi and Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation Albert Ramdin respectively. Major Surinamese political parties all extended congratulations to the CPC for its 100th anniversary. Leaders of major political parties attended the CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-level Meeting and the third China-CELAC Political Parties’ Forum virtually. In April, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a video call with Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin. In December, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted the third Ministers’ Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, which Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin attended virtually. The two countries maintained close communication and coordination in international affairs.
China and Suriname carried out productive cooperation against COVID. China provided Suriname with anti-COVID supplies via various channels. In July, vaccines donated by China arrived in Paramaribo.
The two countries made steady advancement in practical cooperation. Progress was made in projects covering infrastructure, agriculture and people’s livelihood.
In August, China’s new ambassador to Suriname Han Jing presented his credentials to President Chandrikapersad Santokhi.
