Special Envoy of Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Visits Myanmar and Bangladesh to Work on the Rakhine State Issue

To promote Myanmar and Bangladesh to further carry out cooperation in properly dealing with the issue of repatriation and placement of people escaping clashes from the Rakhine State, Special Envoy of Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sun Guoxiang successively visited Myanmar and Bangladesh from February 25 to March 5, 2019. He also travelled to Maungdaw District in northern Rakhine State of Myanmar and Cox's Bazar of Bangladesh to inspect the preparations for placement of displaced persons and repatriation receiving channels.

Special Envoy Sun Guoxiang met respectively with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohamed Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque of Bangladesh, and other high-level leaders and political heavyweights from the two countries, during which he encouraged Myanmar and Bangladesh to, in line with the attitude of good-neighborliness, friendliness, flexibility and practicality, speed up the implementation of the repatriation agreement the two countries have reached, and realize the repatriation of the first batch of displaced persons to the Rakhine State at an early date. Special Envoy Sun Guoxiang emphasized that Myanmar and Bangladesh are the parties directly concerned. Only through the friendly cooperation between Myanmar and Bangladesh can the practical settlement to the issue be promoted. The international community should create favorable conditions and play a constructive role in this regard.

Special Envoy Sun Guoxiang expressed that the Chinese side has always provided assistance within its capacity for Myanmar and Bangladesh to properly deal with issues related to the repatriation and placement of people escaping clashes from the Rakhine State. The Chinese side is willing to continue playing a positive role on the basis of the will of Myanmar and Bangladesh as well as their realistic needs.

Speaking positively of the Chinese side's work and efforts, both the Myanmar side and the Bangladeshi side extended the gratitude to the Chinese side and expressed willingness to push forward relevant work in a constructive manner.
