On September 12, 2019, when jointly meeting the press with Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah of Malaysia in Beijing, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed upon enquiry that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) had recently sent a positive signal on resuming the dialogue between the DPRK and the United States (US). This is an important step taken by the DPRK side to promote the process of political solution to the Korean Peninsula issue, and the Chinese side welcomes it. For a period of time, the sound interactions of all parties have also accumulated conditions for the resumption of dialogue. We are glad to see the resumption of DPRK-US dialogue as scheduled in late September.

Wang Yi expressed, the Korean Peninsula issue has dragged on for years, and there have been many dialogues between the US and the DPRK, or among the parties concerned. There are both successful experience and lessons of frustration. Facts have repeatedly proved that to make real progress in dialogue, it is necessary to uphold an equal attitude of mutual respect and earnestly accommodate each other's legitimate concerns. The practice of only putting forward conditions and drawing up a list, or even trying to force the other side to make unilateral concessions through "maximum pressure" never worked in the past, cannot work now and will never work in the future. This is true in the DPRK-US dialogue, as well as in other country-to-country dialogues.

Wang Yi expressed, since the beginning of last year, the DPRK side has taken a series of positive measures, and on these grounds requested the US side to meet it halfway with a positive response. We believe that this is fair and reasonable and hope that the US side will also take practical measures in this regard and make due efforts to ease the situation and promote the dialogue. The United Nations Security Council should also consider initiating discussions on the reversible provisions of the DPRK sanctions resolution at an appropriate time, so as to help the DPRK ease the economic and livelihood difficulties caused by the sanctions, and create conditions and provide support for a political solution to the Korean Peninsula issue. The Chinese side will continue to play a constructive role and make unremitting efforts in safeguarding peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, promoting the building of a peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, and realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
