Spokesperson on the question of the Korean Peninsular

2000-11-15 14:15
Q: What is China's position on the question of the Korean Peninsular?

A: Recently, positive factors in the situation on the Korean Peninsular have increased with the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and Italy, progress in the improvement of the relations between the DPRK and the US, more active people-to-people exchanges between the north and south and increasing contact between the DPRK and countries like Japan and the EU member states. We welcome the above-mentioned progress.

As a close neighbor of the Korean Peninsula, China has always been devoted to peace and stability on the peninsula. We hope that the north and south Korea will enhance trust and achieve reconciliation through dialogues. We welcome and support the efforts made by the DPRK to improve and finally normalize relations with the US, Japan and the EU. We hope that the four-party talks can keep the momentum and gradually yield results. We hope relevant parties will, proceeding from the overall situation of peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, properly solve issues with which they are concerned through dialogue and consultation. The Chinese side is willing to continue to play a constructive role for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
