President Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao of Timor-Leste, Two Countries to Establish Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership of Good-neighborliness, Friendship, Mutual Trust and Mutual Benefit

On April 8, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao of Timor-Leste at the Great Hall of the People. The two heads of state agreed to uplift the bilateral relations to a comprehensive cooperative partnership of good-neighborliness, friendship, mutual trust and mutual benefit, inherit the traditional friendship, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and join hands to seek common development.

Xi Jinping said that China and Timor-Leste have always maintained mutual respect, equality, and friendly cooperation. China is willing to establish the comprehensive cooperative partnership of good-neighborliness,friendship,mutual trust and mutual benefit with Timor-Leste, respects the development path chosen by the own wish of Timor-Leste people, and to firmly support each other on issues concerning each other's core interests and major concerns. Both sides should expand the scale of bilateral trade and investment, strengthen cooperation in the fields of infrastructure construction, connectivity, energy, agriculture, special economic zones and others, and promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges. The Chinese peacekeeping police used to conduct the United Nations peace-keeping missions in Timor-Leste for a long time, and China is willing to provide assistance within its capacity for stability and development of Timor-Leste.

Xanana said that China has provided precious support for the economic and social development of Timor-Leste, and is an important force in maintaining regional and global stability and prosperity. The two countries have agreed to upgrade the level of bilateral relations, which is of strategic significance for Timor-Leste. As a newly-independent country, Timor-Leste is committed to national unity, stability and development. Timor-Leste looks forward to continuous help from China and cooperation with China. Timor-Leste is willing to actively participate in the construction of the Silk Road on the Sea of the 21st century, and welcomes Chinese enterprises to invest in Timor-Leste. Timor-Leste is ready to make contributions for promoting the relations between Portuguese-speaking countries and China.
