Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Dionisio da Costa Babo Soares of Timor-Leste

On August 2, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Dionisio da Costa Babo Soares of Timor-Leste in Bangkok, Thailand.

Wang Yi said, China and Timor-Leste are good partners. In recent years, the two countries have explored cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative, in which a number of projects undertaken by Chinese companies have benefited the people's livelihood in Timor-Leste and are very much welcomed. The Chinese side is ready to draw up plans with Timor-Leste on cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative at an early date and expand cooperation in such areas as petrochemical industry, trade, agriculture and fisheries. The Chinese side always upholds the equality of countries, regardless of their size, always stands with developing countries and firmly safeguards the interests of developing countries in the international affairs. The Chinese side supports Timor-Leste in playing a bigger role in regional and international affairs, and is pleased to see Timor-Leste's accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). China is willing to enhance the bilateral coordination and cooperation under mechanisms such as the United Nations and the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.

Dionisio da Costa Babo Soares said, the relations between Timor-Leste and China have maintained healthy and stable development. Timor-Leste regards China as a trustworthy friend, and is grateful for the assistance the Chinese side has provided for Timor-Leste's economic development. Timor-Leste is willing to actively participate in cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, enhance interconnectivity, and work with the Chinese side for the greater development of the bilateral comprehensive cooperative partnership.
