On September 21, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with National Security Advisor U Thaung Tun of Myanmar when attending the UN General Assembly in New York. Both sides mainly exchanged views on the situation in Rakhine State.

U Thaung Tun expressed that the Rakhine State issue involves complex historical, ethnic and religious factors, and the root cause is poverty and backwardness in the region. In recent days, in response to the appeal of various circles, Myanmar has taken a series of practical measures in stopping violence, maintaining stability, humanitarian relief and personnel repatriation. The local situation has been basically alleviated, returning to normal condition. Myanmar agrees that dialogue is the best way to resolve the Rakhine State issue, and is willing to consult with Bangladesh.

Wang Yi noted that China welcomes the Myanmar government's measures in easing the situation in the Rakhine State and supports Myanmar in actively seeking dialogue with Bangladesh. The public speech made by State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi recently helps all parties to learn about Myanmar's position. The Chinese side hopes and believes that the Myanmar government has the wisdom and ability to restore social stability according to law and solve the existing problems through dialogue. The Chinese side calls on the international community to treat the Rakhine State situation in an objective and impartial manner and encourage Myanmar and Bangladesh to seek a fundamental solution through friendly consultations. Myanmar and Bangladesh are friendly neighbors of China, and China hopes that the two countries will resolve their differences and live in harmony.
