In 2024, China Myanmar relations continued to develop based on the spirit of a community with a shared future and comprehensive strategic partnership.
High-level visits maintained. In June 2024, former Myanmar President Thein Sein came to China to attend the 70th anniversary commemoration of the promulgation of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. In July, Myanmar Deputy Prime Minister Soe Win came to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Green Development Forum, and Myanmar Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Than Swe came to China to attend the China-South Asia Expo. In August, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited Myanmar and held talks with Myanmar leaders Min Aung Hlaing, former Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Than Shwe, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Than Swe. In September, Myanmar Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Tin Aung San came to China to attend the Xiangshan Forum, and Myanmar Minister for Home Affairs Yar Pyae came to China to attend the Global Forum on Public Security Cooperation. In November, Myanmar Prime Minister Min Aung Hlaing attend the 8th Greater Mekong Subregion Summit in Kunming, Yunnan and visited Chongqing and Shenzhen, Prime Minister Li Qiang met with him.
China Myanmar economic and trade cooperation has made significant progress, expanding from simple trade and economic assistance to engineering contracting, investment, and multilateral cooperation. China mainly exports complete sets of equipment and electromechanical products, textiles, motorcycle parts, and chemical products to Myanmar, while Myanmar mainly exports agricultural products, and mineral products to China.
At the request of all parties in Myanmar, China actively mediated the ceasefire and peace talk in northern Myanmar, pushing for multiple rounds of meeting between the Myanmar government and local ethnic armed organizations in Kunming and reaching a consensus on ceasefire.
