On December 8, 2020, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended China-Nepal Joint Announcement of the Height of Mount Qomolangma in Beijing. He read the letter from President Xi Jinping to President Bidya Devi Bhandari and delivered a speech.

Wang Yi said that in October last year, President Xi made a state visit to Nepal and mapped out the future development of China-Nepal relations with the Nepalese side, opening up new and bright prospects for the long-standing friendship of the two countries. During the visit, leaders of both countries witnessed the signing of 20 cooperation documents, including the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Protection of Mount Qomolangma, and reached important consensus on scientific research cooperation on Mount Qomolangma. In April this year, President Xi spoke with President Bidya Devi Bhandari over phone and exchanged in-depth views on the development of bilateral relations and anti-pandemic cooperation. This time, the two heads of state exchanged letters and jointly announced the newly measured height of Mount Qomolangma, the important symbol of China-Nepal traditional friendship, is 8,848.86 meters. It not only represents the significant importance to the development of China-Nepal relations attached by both sides, but also the traditional friendship and mutual strategic trust between the two countries.

Wang Yi said that, at present both sides are stepping up the implementation of the outcomes achieved during President Xi's visit to Nepal, jointly fighting against the pandemic and promoting pragmatic cooperation. China is ready to work with Nepal and continue to resolutely support each other in pursuing a development path that suits its national conditions, support each other in defending national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, cement mutual political trust, and synergize each other's development strategies, in order to make steady progress in building the Trans-Himalayan Multi-dimensional Connectivity Network and create a bright future of win-win cooperation between China and Nepal.

Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali said that the joint announcement of the newly measured height of Mount Qomolangma is a very special moment. Nepal and China enjoy a long and deep friendship, and Mount Qomolangma has always been the symbol of Nepal-China friendship. Based on the consensus reached by Nepal and China last year, surveying and mapping departments of both countries have measured the new height of Mount Qomolangma after tremendous efforts. Nepal and China have always made effective cooperation in all areas. Nepal believes that connected by the same mountains and rivers, Nepal-China friendship will develop further as high as Mount Qomolangma, as pure as snow, and as majestic as the Himalayas.
