China and Singapore

In 2024, relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Singapore enjoyed a sound momentum of growth. Friendly exchanges in various fields were expanded, and mutually beneficial cooperation deepened and produced fruitful results.

High-level exchanges between the two countries were frequent. In January 2024, Premier of the State Council Li Qiang met with Tharman Shanmugaratnamin, President of Singapore in Davos during the World Economic Forum 2024 Annual Meeting. In June, Chen Wenqing, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Secretary of the Central Political and Legislative Affairs Commission, travelled to Singapore to attend the Fourth China-Singapore High-Level Forum on Governance and met with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. In July,  member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore in Vientiane, Laos. In September, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan visited China. In October, Premier of the State Council Li Qiang met with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in Vientiane, Laos during the leaders' meetings on East Asia cooperation. In November, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on the sidelines of the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima. In the same month, Lee Hsien Loong, Senior Minister of Singaporepaid an official visit to China. Vice Premier of the State Council Ding Xuexiang visited Singapore and co-chaired the 20th meeting of the China-Singapore Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation with the Singaporean side.

Trade and investment cooperation was productive. Singapore was China’s fifth largest trading partner among ASEAN countries, while China has been Singapore’s largest trading partner for 12 years since 2013. Singapore has been China’s largest source of new investment for 12 years since 2013. In April 2022, Singapore overtook Japan to become China’s largest cumulative source of foreign investment. The Suzhou Industrial Park, Tianjin Eco-City, China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity, Guangzhou Knowledge City, and other key cooperation projects moved ahead steadily.

Cooperation advanced in many other areas, including financial cooperation,  science and technology, education and cultural exchanges. In January 2024, the two governments signed the Agreement between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Singapore on Mutual Exemption of Visas for Ordinary Passport Holders.
