Lebanese President Meets with China's Special Envoy on the Middle East Issue Wu Sike

On July 1, 2009, Lebanese President Suleiman met with visiting Special Envoy of China on the Middle East Issue Wu Sike in the presidential residence.

During the meeting, Suleiman said that the visit of Wu demonstrated the importance China attaches to the Middle East issue. Lebanon appreciates China's firm support for the just cause of Arab over the years and hopes China will continue to make contributions to promoting peace process in the Middle East.

He noted that Lebanon advocates building comprehensive peace in the Middle East on the basis of the Arab Peace Initiative, the decent return of Palestinian refugees and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with full sovereignty and East Jerusalem as the capital.

Wu extended congratulation on the success of Lebanon's recent parliamentary election and admiration on President Suleiman's relentless efforts of leading the Lebanese government and people to maintain national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

He pointed out that the Middle East issue shows signs of change at present. Parties related should seize the opportunity to resume the peace talks as early as possible on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, the principle of "land for peace" and the Arab Peace Initiative and create conditions for realizing peace and stability in the region.

During his visit to Lebanon, Wu also met with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Caretaker Cabinet Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh respectively.
