U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's Special Envoy to Libya Abdel-Elah Al-Khatib Visits China

On August 2, 2011, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with visiting U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's Special Envoy to Libya Abdel-Elah Al-Khatib. The two sides exchanged views on the situation in Libya. Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hailong held talks with Al-Khatib.

Yang said the situation in Libya has become the focus of attention of the international community. The subsequent humanitarian crisis is very worrying. China has been closely following the situation in Libya and is very concerned about the current situation.

Yang stressed that China supports the political solution to the Libyan problems, supports the United Nations and its Security Council to play a leading role in the process of political settlement, and appreciates the African Union (AU) and other regional organizations for their mediation efforts; China supports the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions in a comprehensive and strict manner and supports the increase of humanitarian rescue efforts to ease the humanitarian crisis in Libya. China hopes that the conflicting parties could proceed the perspective of safeguarding the fundamental interests of Libya and the Libyan people and maintaining regional peace and stability, earnestly consider the reconciliation proposals of the international community, adopt a more flexible and pragmatic attitude, achieve an immediate cease-fire and resolve the problems by political means such dialogues and negotiation.

Yang said China is willing to work with United Nations and other relevant parties for an early political settlement of the crisis in Libya.

Wu Hailong said the international community is increasingly calling for a political solution to the crisis. The United Nations should play a role in this regard and particularly increase its mediation efforts. The UN should strengthen the coordination with the AU and other regional organizations, seek an early ceasefire in Libya, and start the inclusive political dialogue process to ease the current situation.

Khatib introduced UN's latest political solutions, mediation efforts and engagements with the related parties. Ha thanked China for its support to his work. He said the UN considers the role played by China in facilitating the political settlement of the Libyan problems important and the United Nations is willing to work with the international community to resolve the Libyan crisis by political means as early as possible.
