Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Meets with Benin Foreign Minister

On February 17th, 2004, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met at Diaoyutai State Guest House with Rogatien Biaou, visiting Benin Minister for Foreign Affairs and African Integration. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and issues of common interest.

Li Zhaoxing said that the long-standing friendly relations between China and Benin have been developing very smoothly. Bilateral cooperation in various areas has achieved outstanding results. The two countries have also coordinated and cooperated closely in international affairs. The Chinese government sings high praise for the Benin government's "one-China" stand and is ready to strengthen exchanges and trust between the two countries and to further the friendly and cooperative bilateral relations. Li Zhaoxing congratulated Benin on its election as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. He expressed hopes for the two sides to cooperate within the Security Council so as to jointly safeguard the rights and interests of developing countries.

 

Mr. Biaou expressed his satisfaction with the close cooperation between China and Benin since the two countries resumed diplomatic relations in 1972, saying that the cooperation between China and Benin has become a wonderful example of "South-South cooperation". He emphasized that Benin would continue to stick to the "one-China" policy, oppose any attempt to split China and remains ready to enhance cooperation with China in all fields, including within the UN Security Council.

The two foreign ministers signed an agreement on the establishment of a mechanism of political consultation between the two foreign ministries.
