Wang Yi: The Chinese Side's Determination and Actions to Commit to China-Africa Unity and Friendship Remain Unchanged

On June 24, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Ezechiel Nibigira of Burundi, Foreign Minister Aurelien Agbenonci of Benin, Foreign Minister Nhial Deng Nhial of South Sudan and Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara of Gambia respectively.

Wang Yi said that Burundi is China's all-weather friend in Africa and the two countries have stood side by side through thick and thin. China and Benin enjoy traditional friendship. China respects the development path suited to the national conditions of Benin explored by the people of Benin. It is believed that Benin will surely achieve national stability and economic and social development. China decided to establish diplomatic relations with South Sudan on the day of South Sudan's independence, and is willing to continue to contribute to South Sudan's peace process and economic development. Since the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia, bilateral relations have witnessed all-round and rapid development with notable cooperation achievements.

Wang Yi pointed out that the current international situation is complex but the Chinese side's determination and actions to commit to strengthening unity and friendship with African countries remain unchanged. We are willing to align the Belt and Road Initiative and the eight major initiatives proposed at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) with development strategies of African countries to promote practical cooperation for more new outcomes and strengthen exchanges and sharing of experience in state governance and administration to improve the level of governance. As for major practical cooperation projects of the concerns of other countries, the Chinese side is ready to make steady progress on the basis of scientific decision-making in the principle of mutual benefit and with a responsible attitude to ensure sustainable and high-quality cooperation. China encourages Chinese enterprises to participate in investment in Africa in accordance with the principle of the market, help Africa's industrialization process, and enhance the independent development capacity of African countries.

Foreign Minister of Burundi expressed that Burundi-China friendly cooperation has made substantial progress and both sides have supported and trusted each other. The Burundian side highly recognizes the Belt and Road Initiative, appreciates the FOCAC Beijing Summit for promoting the well-being of the African people, and will continue to firmly support the Chinese side's core interests and major concerns.

Foreign Minister of Benin noted that Benin is satisfied with Benin-China relations and Africa-China relations. The coordinators' meeting is a useful platform for all parties to implement the outcomes of the Beijing Summit. Under the current circumstances, multilateralism is the only correct choice. Only by adhering to multilateralism can the voice of small and medium-sized countries, especially African countries, be heard. He thanked the Chinese side for upholding justice for developing countries in international affairs.

Foreign Minister of South Sudan expressed that South Sudan appreciates the Chinese side's help in various fields, especially the Chinese side's firm support for promoting peace talks and making positive contributions to South Sudan's peace process. South Sudan is ready to draw experience from China's development, and expand bilateral practical cooperation under the framework of China-Africa cooperation to achieve better development of its own.

Foreign Minister of Gambia said that the Gambian side reiterates its adherence to the one-China principle and will stand firmly with the Chinese side on international occasions. Since the resumption of diplomatic relations, bilateral cooperation in various fields has made substantial progress. Gambia is a reliable friend and sincere partner of China.

The four foreign ministers expressed warm congratulations on the election of Qu Dongyu as Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and looked forward to further strengthening communication and coordination with the Chinese side in international organization affairs. Wang Yi thanked the African side for its strong support and said that Qu Dongyu's election is not only a success for China, but also conducive to safeguarding and expanding the interests of Africa and other developing countries.

After the meetings, Wang Yi and the four foreign ministers also witnessed the signing of relevant bilateral cooperation agreements respectively.
