China and Comoros

Bilateral Political Relations

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Comoros on November 13, 1975, the friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries has developed smoothly. In September 2024, the two countries established a strategic partnership.

Recent important visits from the Chinese side include: State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi (January 2022), and Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference He Baoxiang (May 2024, attended the inauguration ceremony of President Azali Assoumani as President Xi Jinping's Special Envoy).

Recent important visits from the Comoran side include: President Azali Assoumani (state visit in June 2003; attended the China (Ningxia) International Investment and Trade Fair and the Third China-Arab States Economic and Trade Forum in 2012 as former president; attended the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September 2018 and September 2024, during which President Xi Jinping met with him on both occasions), President of the National Assembly Moustadroine Abdou (attended the Sixth China-Arab States Expo in September 2023), and Foreign Minister Dhoihir Dhoulkamal (attended the 10th Ministerial Conference of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum in May 2024).

Bilateral Economic and Trade Relations and Economic-Technical Cooperation

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the economic and trade relationship as well as economic and technical cooperation between China and Comoros have been developing steadily. Since 1976, China has been providing various forms of aid to Comoros, including the construction of the water-supply project at Nioumakélé, the People's Palace, the government office building, the presidential residence, the TV and broadcasting building, and the maintenance of the Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport.

In 2024, the total trade volume between China and Comoros was 97 million USD. After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, both sides actively engaged in cooperation to combat the pandemic, with China providing pandemic prevention supplies to Comoros.

Exchanges and Cooperation in Culture, Education, Health, and Other Areas

The two countries have signed a cultural cooperation agreement. Chinese acrobatic troupes and folk music ensembles have visited Comoros multiple times for performances, and China has held film weeks and handicraft exhibitions in Comoros, which have been well-received by the Comoran side. China has been offering scholarship quotas to Comoros since 1982. China has been sending medical teams to Comoros since 1994, with a total of 16 batches comprising over 172 medical personnel. The joint China-Comoros malaria eradication project has achieved significant results in Comoros.
