On the afternoon of July 20, 2011, President Hu Jintao held talks with his Cameroonian counterpart Paul Biya at the Great Hall of the People. The two heads of state agreed to take the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties as a new starting point to push China-Cameroon friendly cooperative relations to a higher level.

"Chinese-Cameroonian ties have endured the test of time and the twist-and-turns of international circumstance over the past four decades," Hu said. He underlined the close contact between the leaders of the two countries, enhanced political mutual trust, expanding trade and economic cooperation and sound coordination and cooperation on international and regional issues. "China appreciates Cameroon's long-term adherence to the one-China policy," Hu said.

Biya said Cameroon and China have just celebrated the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the two countries have established comprehensive friendly cooperative relations with frequent high-level exchanges, deepening mutual trust and understanding, increased cooperation in all areas and close coordination in international and regional affairs. Cameroon-China cooperation has become a model of Africa-China cooperation. He reiterated that Cameroon will stick to the one-China policy and thanked for China's disinterested assistance for Cameroon's economic and social development.

Hu said at the new historical starting point, China is ready to continue working with Cameroon to build and develop bilateral friendly cooperative relations in the following three aspects to bring more benefits to both peoples. First, consolidate political relations and remain good friends of mutual trust. He urged the two sides to conduct various forms of dialogue, cooperation and exchanges between leaders, legislatures, government branches and ruling parties to further build up mutual trust and expand consensus. Both sides should also maintain close consultations and coordination on global issues like climate change, food security and poverty relief and safeguard legitimate rights and interests of their respective countries and developing nations at large. Second, deepen economic and trade cooperation and remain good partners of mutual benefit. Both sides should improve bilateral economic and trade cooperation mechanisms, give full play to the role of China-Cameroon Mixed Committee on Economy and Trade and enhance overall planning, guidance and coordination. Both sides should focus efforts on ensuring the timely completion and quality of the projects already started and step up efforts in prophase preparations for the projects yet to be started so as to launch these projects as early as possible. Hu urged both sides to tap potential, expand cooperation scale, actively explore cooperation in various forms, and enhance cooperation on energy, resources, infrastructure construction and agriculture. China understands and supports Cameroon's efforts for building the emerging country and is ready to continue helping Cameroon to improve its autonomy and capacity for sustainable development. Third, keep closer humanities exchanges and remain good brothers of mutual affinity. Hu suggested the two states advance their traditional friendship and expand cooperation in culture, education, human resources training, health care and tourism.

Biya fully agreed with President Hu's proposals on furthering bilateral ties, saying Cameroon is ready to work with China to enhance pragmatic cooperation on politics, economy, health, education, science, technology, couture and sports and continuously advance bilateral friendly cooperative relations for the benefit of both peoples.

Prior to the talks, President Hu held a welcome ceremony for Biya at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
