On the afternoon of July 21, 2011, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, met respectively with visiting Cameroonian President Paul Biya and Deputy Speaker of the ROK National Assembly Chung Ui-hwa at the Great Hall of the People.

While meeting with the Cameroonian president, Wu said President Biya is an old friend of Chinese people and has made important contributions to building China-Cameroon friendship and promoting bilateral ties. The Chinese side appreciated Biya for these efforts. Wu said this year marks the 40th anniversary of China-Cameroon diplomatic ties. With the joint efforts of both sides, bilateral relations have been more mature. Both sides have shown mutual understanding and support on issues concerning their respective core interest and major concerns, maintained close communication and coordination on major regional and international affairs and continuously deepened political trust. The pragmatic cooperation between both sides has expanded from traditional trade cooperation to project contracting and industrial cooperation, laying the material foundation for the development of bilateral ties. Both sides have also conducted colorful exchanges and cooperation in the humanities field and cemented the social and public opinion basis for bilateral friendship. China attaches great importance to developing ties with Cameroon and is ready to take the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties as a new starting point, plan cooperation in all areas from a strategic height and push bilateral ties to a higher level. "The NPC is ready for further exchanges and cooperation of all levels and in all fields with the Cameroonian parliament, so as to contribute to the development of bilateral ties and pragmatic cooperation," Wu said.

Biya said Cameroon admires China's enormous achievements in its development, expressing belief that the Chinese people will surely build a better future for their country under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC). He said Cameroon-China relations have been strengthened in recent years and the form of cooperation has been increasingly diversified, which brings tangible benefits to both peoples. The government, parliament and political parties of Cameroon all hold positive attitude toward its relationship with China and are willing to make further efforts to push the traditional friendship to bear new fruits.

In his meeting with Chung Ui-hwa, Wu first congratulated on the success of the sixth meeting of the two parliamentary bodies' regular exchange mechanism. He said China and the ROK are close neighbors and developing bilateral friendly cooperative relations is not only conducive to the fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples, but also in line with the trend of peace and development. China attaches great importance to ties with the ROK and always takes developing the ties as a priority of China's foreign policy for neighboring countries. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 19 years ago, China-ROK friendly exchanges and cooperation has shown a sound momentum of rapid development in the political, economic, trade and humanities fields, Wu said. As an important part of bilateral ties, the relationship between the National People's Congress (NPC) and the ROK National Assembly has been pushed to one new level after another. Since its launch in 2006, the regular exchange mechanism between the National People's Congress (NPC) and the ROK National Assembly has become a significant platform for the two nations to further their strategic mutual trust, expand friendly exchanges and promote pragmatic cooperation, said Wu. He expressed his hope that the two sides could further improve the function of the mechanism, enrich the connotations of exchanges and expand cooperation in depth and width in a bid to inject new vitality into the China-ROK strategic and cooperative partnership.

Chung said the ROK is satisfied with the development of the bilateral relations and is ready to take the opportunity of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties next year to push bilateral ties to a new high. The ROK National Assembly will work closely with the NPC and take full advantage of the regular exchange mechanism in an aim to play a positive role to further foster the ties between the ROK and China, Chung said.

Vice Chairperson Chen Zhili of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress was present at Wu's meeting with Chung.
