Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Holds Talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cote d'Ivoire Bakayoko

On May 11, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cote d'Ivoire Youssouf Bakayoko in Beijing.

Yang said the bilateral relationship has kept a sound and smooth development with fruitful cooperation in all areas since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 24 years ago. The two countries have supported each other in international affairs and enhanced the friendship between the two peoples, said Yang. He noted the Chinese government cherishes the friendship with Cote d'Ivoire and will as always support Cote d'Ivoire's peace process. Yang also pledged China is willing to make concerted efforts with Cote d'Ivoire to enhance mutual political trust, strengthen friendly exchanges, deepen trade cooperation for common development and expand collaboration in the fields of culture, education, health care and personnel training to promote humanistic exchanges. Both sides should also strengthen cooperation in international affairs to safeguard common interests and push the friendly cooperative ties to a higher level, he added.

Bakayoko said since the establishment of diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have been closer with fruitful cooperation scored between both sides. Bakayoko expressed his appreciation for China's great support for the peace process of Cote d'Ivoire and huge assistance given by China in enabling the African country to implement many projects. Cote d'Ivoire thanked China's efforts to support it in safeguarding national sovereignty, dignity and legal rights and interests, Bakayoko said, adding that his country firmly adheres to the one-China policy and supports China's peaceful reunification. Bakayoko also briefed Yang on the latest developments of the peace process in Cote d'Ivoire.

Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern.

On the afternoon of the same day, Youssouf Bakayoko, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cote d'Ivoire, and Wei Jianguo, Vice Commerce Minister of China, signed an economic and technological cooperation agreement between the two governments and a memo on Cote d'Ivoire's recognition of the market-economy status of China.
