Wen Jiabao Meets with Foreign Leaders Attending the 10th Western China International Economy & Trade Fair

On October 16, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met in Chengdu respectively with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire Guillaume Soro, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, who are here for the 10th Western China International Economy & Trade Fair.

Wen extended welcome to the six prime ministers for their attending the fair, saying that the Chinese government supports the Western Region to expand exchange and cooperation with these countries.

On October 16, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao meets in Chengdu with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, who is here for the opening ceremony of the 10th Western China International Economy & Trade Fair & the 2nd Western China International Cooperation Forum.

During his meeting with Nguyen Tan Dung, Wen said Vietnam is a friendly neighbor and an important cooperation partner of China, and the two countries share broad common interests. In recent years thanks to the joint efforts of both sides, China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership has been enriched continuously. The Communist Party of China and the Chinese government attach great importance to the relationship with Vietnam and will maintain high-level contact, enhance political mutual trust with Vietnam and properly handle border and South China Sea issues, Wen said. He pledged to work along with Vietnam to cope with the international financial crisis, promote steady growth of bilateral trade and step up efforts to work out a five-year development plan on China-Vietnam economic and trade cooperation to achieve common development. China is ready to cooperate closely with Vietnam to push friendly cooperation between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to a higher level.

Dung said to develop the comprehensive strategic partnership with China is an unswerving policy of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Vietnamese government. Vietnam will keep high-level exchanges, expand the scale of bilateral trade and investment and cooperate with China in the "Two Corridors and One Ring" and other infrastructure programs. Vietnam is ready to work with China to ensure the success of activities on the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic ties and Vietnam-China Friendship Year in a bid to carry on the traditional friendship. Vietnam will proceed from the overall situation of bilateral relations to properly settle the South China Sea issue and other problems via friendly negotiation with China so as to preserve the development of bilateral ties. As the rotating president of ASEAN, Vietnam will play a positive role in boosting ASEAN-China cooperation, Dung added.

During his meeting with Hun Sen, Wen said China and Cambodia are partners of comprehensive cooperation and have helped and supported each other and cooperated closely in bilateral and multilateral fields. Confronted with the global financial crisis, China will spare no effort in its cooperation with Cambodia and will jointly overcome the difficulties, Wen said. China is ready to continue effective measures to maintain the sound momentum of bilateral trade, well implement infrastructure projects built with Chinese assistance in Cambodia and actively explore new areas and modes of cooperation. China would like to continue offering assistance within its capacity for Cambodia's economic and social development.

Hun Sen hailed the smooth development of bilateral ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations 50 years ago. He appreciated China's long-standing assistance, saying it has brought about benefits for numerous Cambodians. The Cambodian government and its people cherish their friendship and cooperation with China, he said, vowing to keep frequent contact, enhance cultural, and youth exchanges with China. He hoped China will continue it's support of and participation in Cambodia's economic construction to improve the country's capacity of overcoming the global financial crisis and promote the country's sustainable development.

During his meeting Guillaume Soro, Wen said Cote d'Ivoire is China's good friend and partner in Africa. China attaches importance to ties with Cote d'Ivoire and is ready to enhance exchange and build mutual understanding and cooperation with Cote d'Ivoire. He urged both sides to tap complementary advantages, make innovation on cooperation mode and expand trade scale. Wen vowed to encourage competent and reputable Chinese companies to invest in Cote d'Ivoire, especially in such sectors as transportation, telecommunications and electric power.

Soro appreciated China's consistent support to the peace progress and economic reconstruction of his country, pledging to stick to the one-China policy. Cote d'Ivoire will commit itself to developing friendly cooperation with China and hopes to promote high-level visits, trade and economic ties with China, he said. Soro spoke highly of China's policy towards Africa, welcomed China to expand trade and investment in Africa and Cote d'Ivoire and acknowledged that the Africa-China cooperation was mutually beneficial and win-win.

During the meeting with Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Wen hailed the steady development of China-Kenya ties and close friendly exchange in recent years. The two countries have coordinated closely on major international and regional issues, thus safeguarding common interests. China is ready to expand exchange and cooperation with Kenya in such sectors as economy, trade, infrastructure construction and humanities and to well implement follow-up actions of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum Beijing summit in 2006. It conforms to the fundamental interests of China and Africa to further their new-type strategic partnership, which will be conducive to world peace and sustainable development, Wen noted. "China will increase its assistance to and cooperation with Africa, jointly cope with the global financial crisis and fulfill the Millennium Development Goals along with Africa," he said.

Odinga said China and Kenya enjoy profound friendship and have shown mutual understanding and support for each other in the cause of national independence and construction. The two countries have become sincere friends and partners and Kenya is full of confidence in China's development prospect. Kenya will learn from China's experience and step up cooperation with China in trade, economy, infrastructure construction, education and tourism, he said. He appreciated China's efforts in supporting and helping the development of African nations, pledging to work along with China to cope with global and regional challenges such as climate change and pirates.

On October 16, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao meets in Chengdu with East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, who is here for the opening ceremony of the 10th Western China International Economy & Trade Fair & the 2nd Western China International Cooperation Forum.

During his meeting with East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, Wen said bilateral ties have been developing smoothly since the establishment of China-East Timor diplomatic relations in 2002 and both sides have continuously enhanced their political trust and pragmatic cooperation. China supports the independent choice of East Timor people and voices support to the country's peace, stability and development. China is ready to continue offering assistance within its ability to East Timor and encourage Chinese businesses to invest in the country. The two countries could strengthen cooperation in trade, agriculture and resources, he said.

Xanana Gusmao appreciated China's precious support and assistance to his country's independence, social and economic development. "The China-aided infrastructure projects and the Chinese medical team are well received in East Timor and have become a token of our friendship," he said. East Timor attaches importance to China's development and role and hopes to enhance exchange and cooperation with China to relieve poverty and jointly safeguard the rights and interests of developing countries, he noted.

On October 16, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao meets in Chengdu with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, who is here for the opening ceremony of the 10th Western China International Economy & Trade Fair & the 2nd Western China International Cooperation Forum.

During his meeting with Sri Lankan counterpart Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, Premier Wen said Sri Lanka is a friendly close neighbor of China. "It is in the fundamental interests of China and Sri Lanka and conducive to regional peace, stability and development to develop the partnership of comprehensive cooperation," Wen said. China supports Sri Lanka's efforts for national reconciliation, stability and economic development, he noted. China supports domestic companies to cooperate with Sri Lanka and take part in the country's post-war reconstruction as well as economic and social development.

Wickremanayake appreciated China's support and assistance over the years, saying his country under post-war reconstruction hopes to strengthen exchange with China and carry out more cooperation in such fields as economy, trade, infrastructure and education in a bid to realize lasting peace and development.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming, Secretary of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee Liu Qibao and Governor of Sichuan Province Jiang Jufeng attended the meetings.
