On April 13, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama of Nigeria. Both sides reached broad consensus on earnestly promoting the implementation of results achieved during the visit paid by President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria to China, and enhancing the comprehensive development of China-Nigeria strategic partnership. The two sides also exchanged in-depth views on international and regional issues of common concern.

On the same day, Wang Yi and Geoffrey Onyeama held a grand reception to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria. Nearly 300 people including representatives from different sectors of the two countries, and diplomatic envoys from various African countries in China attended the reception.
