Xi Jinping Leaves Johannesburg for China after African Trip

On December 5 local time, the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) came to a close. President Xi Jinping set out for China by special plane at that night.

From December 1 to 5, President Xi Jinping paid state visits to Zimbabwe and South Africa, and co-chaired the Johannesburg Summit of the FOCAC with President Jacob Zuma of South Africa in Johannesburg of South Africa.

On December 5, President Xi Jinping and President Jacob Zuma of South Africa co-chaired the plenary session of the Summit. All participants in the meeting agreed to upgrade China-Africa relations to a comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership and adopted the Declaration of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Johannesburg Action Plan (2016-2018) of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. All of them determined to make joint efforts to strengthen "the five major pillars" which include equality and mutual trust in politics, win-win cooperation in economy, exchanges and mutual learning in civilizations, mutual assistance in security, and unity and coordination in international affairs.

At the opening ceremony of the Summit held on December 4, President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech titled "Open a New Era of China-Africa Win-Win Cooperation and Common Development". He expressed that China stands ready to implement mainly the "ten major cooperation plans" with Africa in the next three years. These plans cover ten fields including industrialization, agricultural modernization, infrastructure, finance, green development, trade and investment facilitation, poverty reduction and people's benefits, public health, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and peace and security. To ensure the successful implementation of the "ten major cooperation plans", China decides to provide a total of 60 billion USD of funding support.

In Johannesburg, President Xi Jinping held bilateral and collective meetings with leaders of multiple African countries, attended the closing ceremony of the High-level Dialogue of China-Africa Leaders and Business Representatives and the fifth China-Africa Business Forum and delivered a keynote speech with the theme of "Working together to Write a New Chapter in China-Africa Cooperation", making five proposals on further enhancing China-Africa friendly cooperation.

During the Summit, President Xi Jinping also attended the opening ceremonies of the achievement photo exhibition on the 15th anniversary of the FOCAC and China-Africa equipment manufacturing industry exhibition. President Xi Jinping, together with President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, and Robert Mugabe, rotating Chairman of the African Union (AU) and President of Zimbabwe, cut ribbons for the two exhibitions.

This is the seventh visit of President Xi Jinping to the African continent and also his second visit to Africa after taking office as Chinese President. Before his visit to Africa, President Xi Jinping, at the invitation of President Francois Hollande of France and Chair Laurent Fabius of the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference in Paris, arrived in Paris on November 29. On November 30, he attended opening events of the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris and delivered an important speech titled "Join Hands to Build Cooperative, Win-Win, Fair and Reasonable Governance Mechanism of Climate Change".
