Chadian President Deby Meets with Yang Jiechi

On February 16, 2011, Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in the Chadian capital city of N'Djamena.

Deby said since the resumption of diplomatic ties more than four years ago, bilateral relations have made substantial progress. The president said the Chadian-Chinese relations are based on equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs and China is a true friend of Chad. He said bilateral pragmatic cooperation has been strengthened continuously and China has successfully completed a number of aid projects in Chad, which greatly facilitated the social and economic development of the African country and brought about tangible benefits to the Chadian people. Deby said Chad is willing to boost cooperation with China in such areas as infrastructure construction, agriculture and health care. China has spoken out for African countries in international affairs, safeguarding interests of African nations. Chad hopes to strengthen coordination with China on international affairs.

For his part, Yang said Chad has undertaken the path of national reconciliation, political stability and social progress under the leadership of President Deby, and has made significant achievements in economic and social development and improvement of the welfare of the Chadian people. The Chinese side congratulates Chad on these achievements.

Yang said under the personal care and promotion of leaders of the two countries, bilateral relations have been developing rapidly since the resumption of diplomatic ties, with cooperation and exchanges at different levels and in various areas significantly increased. The two sides have improved mutual political trust, supported each other on matters regarding each other's core interests and major concerns, and seen continuous progress in trade and economic cooperation, said the foreign minister. Yang said China attaches great importance to ties with Chad and deems Chad as an important partner in Africa. China is willing to work with Chad to further boost political exchanges, build up mutual political trust and expand mutually beneficial cooperation in economy, trade, infrastructure construction, telecommunications as well as culture and education, in a bid to push bilateral friendly cooperative relations for greater progress.

On the same day, Yang accompanied President Deby to attend the foundation-laying ceremony of Chad’s new parliament building built with Chinese assistance.

Yang also held talks with his Chadian counterpart Moussa Faki Mahamat. Both sides agreed to work together to tap cooperation potential, expand cooperation areas and develop bilateral partnership of long-term stability, sincere friendship and comprehensive cooperation.

Yang arrived in N'Djamena on February 15 for an official visit to Chad.
