The People's Republic of China and Bosnia and Herzegovina established diplomatic relations on April 3, 1995.
In February 2021, Milorad Dodik, the Chairperson of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, attended the China-CEEC (China-Central and Eastern European Countries) Summit. In February 2022, Zoran Tegeltija, the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. In October 2023, Marinko Čavara, the President of the House of Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, came to China to attend the 3rd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. In March 2024, Xiao Jie, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, visited Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In 2023, the bilateral trade volume between China and Bosnia and Herzegovina was US$360 million, an increase of 17.6% year-on-year.
In recent years, Chinese art groups went to Bosnia and Herzegovina to perform during the "Happy Spring Festival" events.
In November 2021, the 5th China-CEEC Capital Mayors' Forum, hosted by Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was held via video link. There are currently 2 Confucius Institutes and 1 Confucius Classroom in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The University of East Sarajevo and the University of Banja Luka have Sinology departments.
