On September 27, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Péter Szijjártó.

Wang Yi said that Hungary is the first European country to sign an inter-governmental cooperation document on Belt and Road cooperation with China. Under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, China-Hungary Belt and Road cooperation has yielded fruitful outcomes, setting a good example of a new type of international relations. China welcomes Hungary to attend the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, and stands ready to work with Hungary to take this opportunity to increase mutual trust and friendship, make new strategic plans for and inject new and strong impetus into the next-stage development of China-Hungary relations. China is ready to work with Hungary to build the Hungary-Serbia Railway project well, and jointly set a benchmark of China-Hungary practical cooperation.

Wang Yi said that the anti-subsidy probe by the European Union (EU) into China's electric vehicles is in violation of basic rules of international trade and quite likely to disturb the global automobile industrial and supply chains. China's adherence to the path of green, low-carbon and sustainable development is in complete alignment with the development direction of the EU. China and the EU are partners, not rivals. The upgrading of the manufacturing industry depends on fair competition, not protectionism. Wang Yi expressed his hope that Hungary will continue to promote the EU to adopt a more active and open policy of cooperation with China, and work with China to jointly act on true multilateralism, safeguard the UN-centered international order, and promote the sound and steady development of China-EU relations.

Péter Szijjártó said that Hungary has benefited a lot from important outcomes yielded by Hungary-China Belt and Road cooperation. Hungary will actively attend the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, continue to deepen Hungary-China Belt and Road cooperation, steadfastly advance the building of the Hungary-Serbia Railway, and promote the further development of bilateral relations. Hungary is strongly opposed to decoupling with China, hopes that the EU and China will enhance cooperation, and does not support the EU in taking any measures not conducive to fair competition and cooperation. Hungary appreciates China's efforts in contributing to peace in Europe, and hopes that China will continue to play a positive role in this regard.
