On April 29, 2002, Chairman Li Peng of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and his wife Zhu Lin met with Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski and his wife at the Great Hall of the People. Li first welcomed Trajkovski to China, and spoke positively of his successful visit to China. Li said Trajkovski's visit has a great impact on strengthening the friendship between the Chinese and Macedonian people and promoting friendly cooperation of mutual benefits.

Li said that since the normalization of China-Macedonia relations, with joint efforts, bilateral friendly relations and cooperation have rapidly recovered. China is satisfied with that and highly appreciates the president's personal contributions to it.

Li said that it is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples to further develop friendly cooperation with Macedonia in all fields on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence, including mutual respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit. China is appreciative of and would like to thank the Macedonian government and president for their commitment to the One China policy.

On cooperation between China's NPC and the Macedonian parliament, Li said that the NPC would like to conduct exchanges and cooperation with the parliament of Macedonia in all levels and forms to promote friendship and understanding between the two peoples and the development of bilateral relations. The foreign affairs committee of the Macedonian parliament visited China soon after the two countries normalized diplomatic ties and played an active part in resuming the cooperation between the two parliaments. A delegation of the NPC foreign affairs committee would visit Macedonia sometime this year.

Trajkovski said that he held fruitful talks with President Jiang Zemin. During the talks, they reached a consensus on bilateral relations and international issues and agreed that the two countries have no differences or disputes. They hold a positive attitude towards the future development of bilateral relations. He said that there is still great potential for the development of relations. The meetings and talks he held with Chinese leaders on the visit are an important step in promoting the development of bilateral relations. The two countries should promote both political and economic cooperation, as well as contact between governments, parliaments and other departments.

Trajkovski reaffirmed that Macedonia adheres to the One China principle, and would not build up any official relations with Taiwan. Macedonia always holds that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole Chinese people. Trajkovski said he and the Macedonian parliament would like to invite Li to visit Macedonia, and Li thanked him for the invitation.
