Premier Zhu Rongji Met with Macedonian President

On April 29, 2002, Premier Zhu Rongji met with visiting Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski at Zhongnaihai. Zhu congratulated Trajkovski on his successful visit, saying the two heads of state held successful talks on bilateral relations and issues of common concern, reached broad consensus, and signed a joint statement on consolidating and promoting friendly relations and cooperation, which would guide the development of Sino-Macedonian relations. The two sides also signed some other cooperation agreements.

Zhu pointed out that Sino-Macedonian relations of friendship and mutual benefit have recovered rapidly with joint efforts since the normalization of diplomatic ties, and achieved satisfactory results. China is ready to enhance political and economic exchanges and cooperation with Macedonia.

Zhu said the Chinese government attaches importance to economic cooperation and trade with Macedonia, and is ready to further the economic and trade relations with Macedonia on the principles of equality, mutual benefit and market economy. In order to deepen bilateral economic coopeation and trade, the two sides may work in the following three areas. First, they should bring into full play the role of departments concerned of the two governments and the joint committee on economy and trade between China and Macedonia, explore cooperation areas and discover and solve the problems in cooperation timely. Second, they should give full play to the initiative of the enterprises of the two countries, encourge them to increase contacts and seek cooperation opportunities. Third, they should actively promote each other's products and increase the mutual recognition of each other's products and technologies. Zhu expressed the belief that with joint efforts, China-Macedonia economic relations and trade will score new development.

Trajkovski first thanked Zhu for the meeting. He said that he had an extensive exchange of views with Chinese leaders on bilateral relations and other issues during the visit. His visit is fruitful and his contacts with the Chinese side at all levels are very valuable. Trajkovski said developing economic cooperation with China is very important. During the visit, he saw with his own eyes the development and changes in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an, and saw the important role of the Chinese economy in promoting regional stability and prosperity. Therefore, he hopes China will encourage its entreprises to invest in Macedonia and promote Macedonia's stability and development. Trajkovski reaffirmed that he will adhere to the One China policy and will allow no one to interfere in the development of Macedonia-China relations.

Zhu expressed appreciation for the solemn commitment of Trajkovski on the Taiwan issue. Zhu said that although Sino-Macedonian relations have undergone ups and downs, the bilateral ties will continue to develop as long as we can draw lesson from the past. Zhu said the Chinese government respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Macedonia, supports the active efforts of Macedonia in maintaining the internal stability, and understands its policy to join in European integration.
